Obituary

Mervin Bruce Boyd, Sr., better known to those who knew and loved him as Bruce, Big Bruce, Dad and Granddaddy, was born on August 27, 1955 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the third child born to Whaley and Jeanette Boyd and he was a true Charlestonian. His appointed time of transition was 6:33 A.M., Thursday, May 26, 2022.

Bruce attended the public schools of Charleston County (A.B. Rhett Elementary School and Burke High School). He played youth sports for Mitchell Park and as an adult he enjoyed watching baseball, football and basketball games.

Bruce loved his family and we all loved all of him dearly. He was married to his wife, Renee Gowans-Boyd for 36 years (May 24, 1984). His only daughter, Shalawn Boyd was the love child from his first marriage. Mervin Bruce Boyd, Jr. and Julian A. Boyd were his blessings from his marriage with Renee. His one and only granddaughter, Anjouney Boyd, kept that twinkle in his eyes and spirit. Life with her brought him that unconditional love and joy we all long for in our daily life.

Bruce lived in Fayetteville, NC for 38 years. He loved being a Flea Market vendor and traveling the circuit, socializing with people, mentoring to the less fortunate, watching old cowboy and army movies and eating a good home cooked meal. He recommitted his life to the Lord in 2010 at Manna Church in Fayetteville. Family first was a priority along with sharing words of wisdom and life's lessons. He was not perfect, but he always prayed for the

best in others. Whenever the boys left his presence you could hear him yell out, "I love you, God bless you and be safe!"

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents: Whaley, Sr. and Jeanette Boyd; and his brother, Whaley Boyd, Jr.

Cherishing loving and fond memories will always be in the hearts of his wife, Renee Gowans-Boyd; his children: Shalawn Boyd (Albert Myles), Mervin Boyd, Jr. and Julian Boyd; granddaughter: Anjouney Boyd; siblings: Mikel Boyd, Wendell Boyd, Frenchie Boyd-Vennings and Carlton Boyd (Erlinda); sister-in-law: Jacqueline C. Boyd; uncle: John Nelson; a special cousin: Ann Bell; and a host of other relatives in South Carolina, Texas, Georgia and New York.
