Mrs. Maude A. Smith

Mrs. Maude Alva Tolton Smith, 74, resident of Mt. Pleasant, SC entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 23, 2021. Obituary On Thursday evening, December 23, 2021, Maude Alva Tolton Smith answered the call to be home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Maude was born on December 19, 1947 in Charleston, SC to the late Ernest Tolton, Sr. and late Thelma Dixon Tolton. She attended the public schools of Charleston County and graduated from Charles A. Brown High School on June 2, 1965. She furthered her education at Morris College in Sumter, SC and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education on August 13, 1970. Maude was a dedicated elementary school teacher with the Charleston County School District for over 31 years, teaching at Baxter Patrick, Hunley Park, and many years at Chicora Elementary School. Without a doubt, the gift the Lord bestowed upon Maude was that of an educator. She had a tremendous heart and affection for children, and was always drawn to them whether at work, at church, or even out and about in her community. Maude was joined in Holy Matrimony to Johnny Smith, Jr. on February 24, 1973. To this union two children were born, Kamaria Smith and Kamika Smith. Maude was a dedicated wife to her husband and mother to “her girls”. A self-proclaimed daddy’s girl, Maude loved and cherished her family. Four short days before she went to be with the Lord, Maude celebrated her 74th birthday surrounded by her devoted husband, Johnny, her girls, her two youngest grandchildren, and one of her nieces. It was a special birthday celebration filled with lots of laughter, love, and joy. Maude united with the body of Christ as a young lady and became a member of St. John’s Reformed Episcopal Church. While in good health Maude was a dedicated member of St. John’s. She was a member of Class #5 and over the years she has served as a member of the Sunday School, Christian Education Committee, Vestry Board and other various committees. She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted husband of 48 years, Johnny Smith, Jr.; her daughters: Kamaria Smith-Frayer (Nathaniel) and Kamika Smith; a bonus daughter: Jacqueline Porcher (Marvin); grandchildren: Jair, Jamez, Nalea, Khairi, KyAnne, Tenesha, and Marvin, Jr.; sister: Yvonne Marshall (Guy); brothers: Ernest Tolton, Jr. (Caron) and Mordecai Tolton (Yolonda); mother-in-law: Geneva Smith; in-laws: Margaret Green, Sandra Scott (Marion), Matilyn Potter (Vinson), Marilyn Vanderhorst (Jake), Carrie Smith and Carl Smith; goddaughter: Verna Smith; fur baby, Bella; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and loved ones.
