Mrs. Mary Magdalene Gibbs

Mrs. Mary Magdalene Gibbs, 83, of Vidalia, Georgia entered into eternal rest on December 9, 2022. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at noon at the Smith-McNeal Funeral Chapel - 2119 Dorchester Road - N. Charleston, SC 29405. There will be a public viewing 11:00 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. the day of the Service. Mrs. Mary Magdalene Gibbs, daughter of the late Reverend Elijah Odom and Mrs. Mary Magdalene Odom was born in Summerville, South Carolina on August 11, 1939. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in Vidalia, Georgia on Friday, December 9, 2022. Mary was raised in the Holiness Church along with her parents and 5 siblings. She attended and graduated from high school in Dorchester County, SC. Mary met and married John Gibbs of Johns Island, SC on April 16, 1964. She was a devoted wife to him until his passing as well as a devoted mother and homemaker with a passion for cooking, gardening and sewing, which she was very skilled in. Most importantly, she had an undeniable love for her family, especially her grandchildren. Along with being skilled in so many things, she also played the guitar, enjoyed basket weaving, quilting and fishing in her younger years. Later, she met Elijah Bradley of Awendaw, SC. They shared many blessed years together until his death. Mary was very fond of him as he was of her. Throughout her life she was dedicated to her family and strangers so selflessly in any way she could. Although her love was stern, her heart was not! The togetherness and love of her family were what she admired and valued more than anything in this world. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings: James Arthur Odom, Lillie Mae Smalls and Lettie Mae Odom; and 6 of her 13 children. Our beloved Mother and Grandmother is survived by her daughters: Jane A. (Nathaniel) Deas, Ethel M. (Alfred) Vice, Dorene (Andrew) Powell, Sara Ann Gibbs, Dianne (Lorenzo) Simmons and Tracey (Norman) Jackson; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; sisters: Virginia (Harry) Johnson and Sylvia (Harry) Larkin; sister-in-law: Ella Odom; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
