Mrs. Hattie Mae McGinnis Gough

Hattie Mae McGinnis Gough, 79, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, August 27, 2017. Hattie Mae was born on April 20, 1938 in McClellanville, SC. She was the daughter of the late York and Hattie McGinnis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Gough, six brothers and four sisters. She was the eleventh child of twelve children.Hattie was one of the first high school graduates of the newly built Lincoln High School in 1954. One day after graduation she traveled, by train, to Los Angeles, California to live with one of her sisters, Dorothy Talley. She attended the University of California Los Angeles (U.C.L.A) Medical Center and received a Vocational Nursing Certificate. Many years later, after marriage and the birth of two children, she graduated from Bergen Community College, New Jersey as a Registered Nurse. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Luke's Hospital, New York City for more than 20 years. Upon her return to McClellanville, she worked as a Registered Nurse at Roper Hospital, Charleston and Sandpiper Rehabilitation Center, Mt. Pleasant. She finally retired from nursing in 2009. Hattie Mae was a kind, compassionate person, who was always available to assist her community when nursing services were needed. She is survived by two children, Larry Gough of Charleston and Kathy Brooks Jones (Edward) of Columbia, Maryland; grandchildren: William Billy Gough, Jarrett Brooks and Jordan Brooks. Great grandchildren; Cameron Gough and Carter Gough. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Juanita Middleton (James), sisters-in-law; Maude Simmons, Mabel Bozier (Lee), Diane Weathers, Hazel Thompson and Margaret Singleton. Hattie leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. She also leaves her cherished nursing sorors from Omicron Chi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority. A viewing for Mrs. Hattie Mae McGinnis Gough will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017 at The Rev. Bryan McNeal, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 4129 Highway 17 N., Awendaw, SC 29429 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Bethel AME Church, 464 Society Rd., McClellanville, SC 29458. Interment: Old Board Cemetery, South Santee Section in McClellanville.
