Arthurine Powell Rivers

Arthurine Powell Rivers of Monroe, North Carolina, formerly of Daniel Island, South Carolina, a native of McClellanville, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at the age of 80 years old. Lovingly known as Ree, she was born on September 18, 1941 to the late Bennie E. Powell, Sr. and Eliza Mitchell Powell of McClellanville, South Carolina. After graduating from Lincoln High School, Ree attended South Carolina State College where she met the love of her life, Henry Rivers, Jr. Arthurine and Henry were united in holy matrimony on February 3, 1962. This union was blessed with four sons and a special son whom they raised as their own. An infant daughter preceded her in death. At an early age Arthurine received Christ as her personal savior at Bethel A.M.E. Church, McClellanville, SC which she considered to be her home church. She continued her Christian walk throughout the remainder of her life. Ministry opportunities allowed Arthurine and Henry to serve various churches in many capacities. She served as a choir member, deacon, elder and first lady, but teaching Sunday School was her passion. She was also a Past Worthy Matron of East Cooper Chapter #365, Order of the Eastern Star. The family has fond memories of her as a Pre-school teacher, excellent seamstress, and exceptional cook. We will miss the family gatherings the she hosted. Always making sure that everyone felt welcomed and left well fed. Arthurine is also preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Bennie, Jr., Benzenia, Dick, Vermel and Clement. Arthurine leaves behind to cherish her memories, Reverend Henry Rivers, Jr., her devoted husband of 59 years; five sons: Henry (Mayra), Dale (Sonia), Vincent (Shanae), Samuel (Juvon) and Sean (Renee); nine grandchildren: Jonathan, Austin, Jasmine, Courtney (Emmanuel), Lauryn, Alexis, Nathaniel, Maielle and Ryland. Arthurine will also be missed by her siblings: Dollie Ann Johnson (Charles), Cassandra Powell, Melvin Powell (Angie), Betty Jenkins (Herman), Alfred Powell (Aminah), Mary Simmons, John Michael Smalls; sister-in-law: Sheila Powell as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
